In December 1997, the parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or the Convention) adopted the Kyoto Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol introduced three new “flexibility mechanisms” to lower the overall costs of achieving the Annex I Parties' emissions targets. These mechanisms enable Parties to access cost-effective opportunities to reduce emissions or to remove carbon from the atmosphere in other countries. These mechanisms are:

1) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects
2) Joint Implementation (JI)
3) International Emissions Trading (IET).

Applus+* has applied to the UNFCCC for accreditation as an Operational Entity under the CDM to perform independent project validations and verification/certification of emissions reductions. The application covers the following sectors: Energy industries (renewable - / non-renewable sources), energy distribution, energy demand, manufacturing industries, chemical industry, construction, transport, mining/mineral production, metal production, fugitive emissions from fuels (solid, oil and gas), fugitive emissions from production and consumption of halocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride, solvents use, waste handling and disposal, afforestation and reforestation, and agriculture.
